April 2020

Dear Alumni and Friends,

None of us could have imagined how our lives would change this year. The global pandemic we are facing has impacted every individual and family in such a profound way. Your Queens College family is no exception.

  • Our students are facing great challenges related to distance learning, personal loss of employment and internships, and the elimination of opportunities to participate in hands-on research projects that are critical to their development.
  • The pandemic has drastically shaped the ways in which our faculty must teach their courses and mentor and nourish their students.
  • Our administration has been working around the clock to ensure the safety of the college community while navigating through a looming budget crisis.

As you may know, QC receives its funding from the government, tuition revenue, and charitable donations that are stewarded by the Queens College Foundation Board. As it is currently projected, New York State will lose between $10 billion and $15 billion in tax revenue this year alone. The shortfall will directly impact funding for public institutions like Queens College.

For the last 40 years the Queens College Foundation, through your charitable donations, has provided substantial support to enrich the fine programs and offerings of our beloved alma mater. In addition, the Foundation has allocated millions of dollars towards scholarships for wonderfully talented students who could not otherwise afford the cost of their education. The Foundation's assets, however, have not been immune to the decline in the financial markets.

To counter the impact of the pandemic, the Queens College Foundation has established a Critical Needs Fund to help address the challenges we will face together. The Fund will help support the entire college community through this crisis and beyond by providing scholarships, paid internships, funding for existing programs and opportunities, and support for new initiatives set forth by our administration.

As students, most of us received a world-class education at little or no cost. We were offered the opportunity to grow as individuals, discover our talents, and develop the critical skills we needed to forge ahead. It is our obligation as proud alumni to rise to the occasion and ensure that the integrity of our programs, the breadth of our offerings, and the many student resources available on campus continue to thrive during this critical moment in history and for many years to come. Queens College needs us now more than ever.

We respectfully ask every member of our alumni family to contribute to the Critical Needs Fund to the best of their ability. The time has truly come for us to do our part for the institution that has served us so well. Please join me and make your donation today.

Thank you for your kind consideration. We wish you and your loved ones the best of health in the weeks and months ahead. To donate, please visit https://qccommunity.qc.cuny.edu/CriticalNeedsFund or text your pledge to 646-846-5420.

Sincerely,
